Introduction

In this article, we’ll show you how to open.IMG file (disk image file) on a Windows or macOS computer. An IMG file is an exact image of a file system. The IMG file can be mounted as a disk or opened in a program such as WinZip.

Method 1;

 

Connect as a disk (Windows)

Click  Win+E. The Explorer window will open. Open the folder with the IMG file.

How to open.IMG file. Double-click on the.IMG file. The system will mount the file as a drive and display its contents.

To copy a file that is on the IMG drive to another folder on your computer, drag the file to the appropriate folder. When you’re done with the IMG file, unmount it. To do this, scroll down the left pane in the Explorer window, right-click on the mounted IMG drive, and then click Eject.

Using WinZip (Windows)

Launch the WinZip program. To do this, click Start > All Apps > WinZip.
Click “Open”. This option is marked with an open blue folder icon in the upper left corner of WinZip.

Select Disk Images (*.img, *.iso, *.vhd, *.vmdk). You will find this option in the lower right corner of the window.

Navigate to the folder with the IMG file.
Select the.IMG file and click Open. A window will open.

Click Yes, and extract files to (folder name). The files will be extracted to a folder that will be created in the folder with the .img file.

Click  Win+E. The Explorer window will open.8

Navigate to the folder with the IMG file. In this folder, you will find a new folder named the same as the IMG file.

How to open.IMG file? Double-click on the new folder. The contents of the.IMG file will be displayed. Now double-click on any file to open it in the appropriate program.

Connect as a disk (Mac OS X)

Open Finder

You will find this icon in the dock (at the bottom of the screen).
Navigate to the folder with the IMG file.

Double-click on the .img file. It will be mounted as a drive; its icon will appear on the desktop. A window will also open displaying the contents of the.IMG file.

  • To copy a file that is on the IMG drive to another folder on your computer, drag the file to the appropriate folder.
  • When you’re done with the IMG file, unmount it. To do this, go to the desktop and drag the IMG disk icon to the “Eject” icon at the bottom of the screen (where the Trash icon is usually located).

  • Find the.IMG file.

  • Now you can open the contents of the IMG file.
